About Volunteer Opportunities

Looking to get more involved in your child’s classroom or the school? There are many opportunities to volunteer, both in and out of the classroom. Help is always needed and appreciated.

Homeroom Representative

A Homeroom Representative is chosen for each classroom at the beginning of the school year. The Homeroom Representative communicates regularly with the teacher/caregivers in the class and coordinates parties and teacher gifts. This is an ideal volunteer position for someone who would like a leadership role in the classroom.  Look for signups for this position early in the year. Clearances required.

Classroom Volunteers

There are many different ways to volunteer in the classroom. Please use this form to indicate the opportunities you are interested in. Your homeroom representative will assign the positions.

Class Party Planners  – There are four annual parties held in your child’s classroom at O’Hara Elementary:  Halloween, Winter, Valentine’s and Year End. These parties last approximately an hour and generally involve 3-4 stations of crafts, games, stories, etc. Each classroom needs 4 caregivers to organize these activities and work with the Homeroom Representative/teacher to make these parties fun for our kids! If you are interested in helping out with the classroom parties, please contact your Homeroom Representative. Clearances required.

Field Trip Chaperones – Classes at O’Hara Elementary generally take 1-2 field trips per year. Caregiver chaperones are needed during these trips to help keep the kids organized and safe.  Your teacher or Homeroom Representative will send out information about upcoming field trips and opportunities to accompany as a chaperone.  Clearances required.

Box Top Coordinator – Last year O’Hara earned $1,400 from the Box Tops for Education Program. Each classroom needs a coordinator to help sort and count Box Tops for two annual collection periods. The Box Top coordinator can also help our Box Top chair spread the word about Box Tops and encourage maximum participation from our families, teachers and community to the benefit of our students and teachers!

Thanksgiving Basket Collection – Each year, O’Hara collects food donations that benefits the Fox Chapel Area Back Packs for Hunger program and/or provides gift cards and food items for all of our families to be able to enjoy a home cooked meal on Thanksgiving. As coordinator, you help communicate with your class and sort and distribute collected items.

Spring Basket Coordinator – O’Hara’s largest fundraiser of the year is the Spring Basket Raffle. Each classroom is assigned a basket theme, and students donate small items to put in the raffle. The classroom basket coordinator helps communicate with your class and collect all donations.

Teacher Assistance – Help your student’s teacher with clerical tasks like photocopying or preparing class materials.

Lunch Volunteers

Caregivers can also volunteer to help the lunch room monitors during their child’s 30-minute lunch period. Volunteers generally help kids open food items, bring them utensils/condiments, and wash tables. This is also a great opportunity to see your child and his or her classmates during their school day. You do not need to sign up in advance for this volunteer role–just show up when you have a free day! For the 2018-2019 school year, the lunch start times are as follows: Kindergarten-11:10AM, First Grade-11:00 AM, Second Grade-11:35 AM, Third Grade-12:35 PM, Fourth Grade-12:45 PM, and Fifth Grade-12:10PM. Clearances required.

Traveling Art Gallery

O’Hara Elementary PTO is proud to host a Traveling Art Gallery (TAG) program run by caregiver volunteers.  We have a print collection of various influential works of visual art. Each year, volunteers are assigned one of these prints. They then visit classes (generally your own child’s class and 1-2 others) to share the piece and lead discussions, activities, etc. for 15-30 minutes at a convenient time for you and the teacher. You do not need an art background for this opportunity. We have plenty of information and ideas to help with each print. If you are interested in becoming a TAG volunteer, please contact Ani at anne.demarco@gmail.com. Clearances required.

Other Programs

In addition to TAG, volunteers are often needed to assist with the following  extracurricular programs during the year: Clearances required.

  • Math Pentathlon
  • Chess Club
  • Classroom Themed-Learning Centers (new for 2018-2019)

Look for emails from the PTO regarding these opportunities.

Special Events

The O’Hara Elementary PTO also hosts a variety of fun school-wide events during the school year. Caregiver volunteers are always needed to assist with these:

  • Back-to-School Social
  • Scholastic Book Fair/Read Across America event
  • Annual Art Show and Showcase Night
  • 5th Grade Day
  • Teacher/Staff Appreciation Events
  • Fundraisers

Stay tuned for emails regarding these events and opportunities to get involved in them.

Library, Music and Art Department Volunteers

Volunteers are sometimes needed to help the school librarians, or volunteer in the Music or Art Department. Look for emails regarding these opportunities.  Clearances required.

Each has a two-year term.  More information on available Board position will become available in the Spring.
